Sophiaâs heart stumbled, threatening to stop. Her breathing facilities certainly had.
How could she say no to that? Felix made it sound so simple, so easy ⦠to just trust him. A cool breeze ruffled the hair at his forehead. Unable to stop herself, she flicked it off his brow using an index finger.
âI want this to work for us,â he whispered.
Sophia teetered on a ledge, his words the last push she needed to fall.
Laying her palm against his cheek, she leaned down and kissed him.
Sensible options be damnedâshe wanted to feel those lips against hers. She wanted to tremble in his arms and leave all her worries behind. Kissing him would do that.
He groanedâa guttural noise that dragged her from lazily wanting to full-on desperation in moments. Her fingers dove into his hair, drawing him closer. The silky texture was divine under her hands, and she massaged his scalp, wanting to feel every inch of him.
He tilted his head back farther, changing the angle of the kiss with expertise.
Marrying Felix would be no hardship. Even trusting him seemed plausible at this moment. What worried her more was giving her heart to a man who could shatter it into a million pieces.
He pulled a hairâs breadth away. âMarry me.â
His lips hovered just out of reach. She leaned in to close the gap but he shifted, dodging her.
âWhat is this? Pleasuring me into capitulation?â She murmured.
âIs it working?â
âYou might need to try harder.â
Her lips parted in greeting as he closed the gap once more, her words proving to be highly incentivising. After dragging her to a standing position, he wrapped her arms about his neck before hitching her into his arms. She clung to him, bringing them into such close contact as to leave no question of his desire for her.
Sophia wished they were in a room, somewhere private. She wanted Felix. She needed to feel him everywhere and have him block out every decision she had to make. For once, she wanted to just experience being with himâto think of him and only him.
This time, when he pulled away they were both left gasping for air.
âWe need to find somewhere to stay.â He lowered her gently to the ground and Sophia was left a little dizzy.
âI just need a minute.â
âIâm potent. I know.â
His grin sent her heart into further flutters. This so wasnât fair. No wonder women fell at his feet all the timeâthat grin should come with a health warning. Not that sheâd be admitting that to him. âNot as potent as my heels combined with brandy.â
He glanced at her shoes, as if noticing the heels for the first time. âWhy do you always wear heels?â
âToo much time out of them means itâs hell to pay when I next have to wear them for hours on end.â
âIâm sure thereâs logic in there somewhere that makes sense. Hop on. Iâll carry you back to the car.â He spun, presenting his back to her.
âYouâre going to piggyback me?â
âYes.â
âThatâs ⦠crazy, yet oddly sweet.
